Commuter Rescues Woman Trapped in Flaming Wreck

A Fountain Valley man commuting to work Thursday morning stopped in busy traffic to pull a woman from a flaming wreck in Huntington Beach.

Robert Myer, 61, was only a few blocks from home at 7 a.m. on his way to Long Beach when he saw a Volkswagen collide with a Plymouth at Newland Street and Warner Avenue. The Plymouth flipped over on its side. When he looked again, the car was in flames.

“I didn’t think anyone was alive in the car,” Myer said. “I just stuck my head in the broken window and a lady above me cried ‘Help me. Help me.’ ”

Lynne Peoples, 36, of Orange was apparently entangled in her seat belt, Myer said. With the help of another motorist who had stopped, Myer freed the woman and carried her from the wreck.

A moment later, he said, the car was an inferno. “The whole time I was afraid of the gas tank,” Myer recalled.

Peoples was taken to Huntington Humana Hospital with minor injuries to her face and released, police said.

Huntington Beach police spokeswoman Jo Anne Bonkowski said the name and condition of the Volkswagen driver was unavailable.
