Border Patrol agents discovered 782 pounds of marijuana valued at $626,000 in an abandoned vehicle Tuesday night near the San Ysidro border crossing.

Mike Nicley, a Border Patrol spokesman, said that agents received an anonymous call reporting that a four-wheel-drive vehicle tried to drive through an international boundary fence near Monument Road, about one mile west of the border crossing.

Agents found a 1986 Ford Bronco stuck in a ditch. A search uncovered the marijuana.

“The vehicle obviously (was used) to smuggle drugs in between ports of entry,” Nicley said. “The driver simply misjudged where he was going and had to abandon it, rather than stay there and get arrested with the contraband.”
