Changes in the design of the DC-10 wing flap assembly were ordered by the Federal Aviation Administration after it was found that corroded bolts caused pieces of a wing to fall to the ground in Watts as a jetliner approached Los Angeles International Airport in June. FAA Aviation Safety Director William Hendricks told Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn by letter that, in the meantime, all DC-10s have been inspected and any corroded bolts have been replaced. No one was injured in the June incident and the plane, arriving from Chicago with 234 people aboard, landed safely.
