2 Warsaw Rail Accidents Kill 12, Injure 120
Two separate Warsaw-area transit accidents--one involving two streetcars, the other involving two trains--killed 12 people and injured more than 120 others Thursday, officials said.
Two trolleys collided at a busy intersection in Warsaw’s western Wola district shortly after 1 p.m., killing six people and injuring 74, many of them seriously, the official PAP news agency said.
About 2 1/2 hours later, a westbound commuter train slammed into the rear of another that had stopped for a signal light near a station about three miles west of the Warsaw city center. Six people were killed and more than 50 were injured, a television station reported.
The front car of the moving train was a mass of twisted metal, with its roof almost totally sheared off. The rear end of the second train was crushed, and the car was derailed.
Both trains were bound for western suburbs when the crash occurred at the start of the afternoon rush hour near the western Wlochy district.
Scores of police and firefighters took part in the rescue actions.
