An Escondido member of the local board of directors for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers was arrested Thursday and charged with suspicion of forcible rape and rape with a foreign object, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

Dewayne Conley, 44, was arrested at 1 p.m. in his San Marcos office, according to Deputy Milton Cherne. Conley was booked into the County Jail at Vista. Bail was set at $15,000.

Conley operated an ambulance company from 1959 to 1982. He ran for the Escondido City Council in 1972 and for Palomar Memorial Hospital’s board of directors in 1984 and 1986.

The victim, a self-employed businesswoman, alleged that the crime occurred in November.

“The traumatic experience caused her to delay reporting for several months,” Cherne reported. “In mid-June, she felt capable of facing the situation and reported it to sheriff’s deputies.”

Subsequent investigations led to Conley’s arrest.
