Flores Says Raiders Don’t Want Hebert

Share

For his last act of the exhibition season, Raider Coach Tom Flores shot down the Bobby Hebert rumor, the only one to surface involving the Raiders and someone else’s quarterback.

Flores also said Sunday that rookie quarterback Steve Beuerlein, who had his left shoulder and elbow banged up in recent exhibitions, is likely to go onto injured reserve, leaving the Raiders with two quarterbacks--Rusty Hilger and Marc Wilson.

As for Hebert, Flores said the Saints called, but the quarterback’s name wasn’t mentioned. Hebert was a big-money free agent out of the United States Football League two years ago and is the backup to Dave Wilson in New Orleans. He has a strong arm, but despite considerable publicity to the contrary, the Raiders weren’t one of the teams pursuing him in 1985, either.

So the Raiders aren’t looking for quarterback help?

“At this point, no,” Flores said.

Because of what’s available or their own preferences?

“Because of our preferences,” Flores said. “We’re not going to make a change just to make a change. We feel we have enough. We feel Rusty is going to get better and that Marc is a very talented guy. We’ll see what happens from there.”
