Monsanto’s aspartame, sold under the NutraSweet brand, will be faced with new competition later this year. At least one non-caloric artificial sweetener is expected to be approved by U.S. regulators in the next few months, and a number of others are expected to hit the market by 1990. Acesulfame-K, sold under the name Sunett and developed by Hoechst A.G. of West Germany, sweetens baked goods, while aspartame breaks down. The product is expected to be approved this year. In the next two years, Pfizer Inc. and Johnson & Johnson are also expected to have artificial sweeteners pass muster at the Food and Drug Administration.
