“Crocodile Dundee” is very secure in the No. 1 postion on the Billboard magazine rental and sales charts. The Paul Hogan vehicle should remain top dog on both charts for a while yet. “Over the Top,” starring Sylvester Stallone, is doing good rental business; in fact, it’s more popular in the rental market (No. 8) than it was in the theaters. But the film of Neil Simon’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs” (No. 13) is doing much better than expected in the rental market. Three movies debuted this week on the rental chart that should be popular--”Dead of Winter” (No. 27), “The Stepfather” (No. 36) and “Betty Blue” (No. 37); the last of these, from France, may turn out to be one of the most popular foreign film rentals of the year. Other charts: “Sleeping Beauty” still heads the kidvid sales chart and “Jane Fonda’s Low Impact Aerobic Workout” continues to lead the health and fitness chart.

* Featuring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, this somber, cerebral movie--nominated for several Oscars, includinng best picture, but accounted something of a disappointment by the critics--is potentially a Top Five rental. It jumped from No. 37 to No. 11, and further upward movement is indicated.
