The Coastal Commission has approved construction of a controversial hotel adjacent to the Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course, requiring the shifting of the driving range from south of the Torrey Pines Inn to north of the inn.

The commission, meeting in San Francisco, approved plans by the Sheraton Corp. to build a four-story, 400-room hotel on the west side of North Torrey Pines Road at Science Park Road. The commission also approved shifting the driving range to make way for the hotel.

The hotel was approved by the San Diego City Council despite warnings from the Navy that the site is beneath the flight of aircraft operating out of Miramar Naval Air Station. Construction is set to begin in March and be completed by fall 1989.
