Be Ready for Heat, Cold During Pope Visit, Officials Say

People planning to attend ceremonies or watch the motorcade for Pope John Paul II should be ready for both hot and cool weather with a visor or hat to guard against the sun and a jacket or wrap for early morning and evening, the Los Angeles chapter of American Red Cross warned Friday.
The organization, responsible for spectator first aid during the papal visit, also is suggesting sunscreen or lotion for those who will be outdoors for prolonged periods. Water in plastic containers also is advisable, the Red Cross said, because crowds will make it difficult to reach vendors.
Also, the Red Cross said, an information card bearing the name and telephone number of an immediately available friend or relative should be pinned to the clothing or placed in the pockets of small children in the event they become lost.
And, the Red Cross urged, “be patient to assure that no one is injured from pushing, shoving or . . . auto accidents.”
First aid stations manned by Red Cross volunteers will be set up along the Pope’s motorcade route.
