Boston College warmed up for USC by defeating Temple, 28-7, Saturday at Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The Eagles, who play the Trojans next Saturday at the Coliseum in a nationally televised game, have won 10 straight games, the longest winning streak in 45 years for Boston College.

Among major college football teams, only Oklahoma and San Jose State currently have longer winning streaks, each with 11 straight.

In winning for the second time this season, the Eagles broke a 7-7 tie in the third quarter when Darren Flutie, the brother of Doug Flutie, scored on a 65-yard pass play. Quarterback Mike Power passed to a wide-open Flutie along the right sideline at the Temple 34, and the senior flanker raced into the end zone untouched.

“That may have broken their back,” said Flutie, who also caught a 10-yard scoring pass from backup quarterback Mark Kamphaus. “They were working so hard and we got a cheap touchdown. I was wide open.”

Flutie finished with five catches for 113 yards as Temple fell to 1-1.

Pitt 34, No. Carolina St. 0--Pittsburgh’s defense set up three touchdowns with an interception, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal in the Panthers’ easy victory at Pittsburgh.

The victory gave Pitt its first 2-0 start since 1983 and dropped to Wolfpack to 0-2.

Craig Heyward, who rushed for 115 yards in 23 carries, scored Pitt’s first two touchdowns on runs of 2 and 5 yards following N.C. State turnovers.

Syracuse 20, Rutgers 3--Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson threw a touchdown pass and set school records for career completions and attempts as the Orangemen defeated the Scarlet Knights at Piscataway, N.J.

McPherson completed his first five passes and capped an opening 76-yard march by connecting with wide receiver Tommy Kane on a 20-yard pass in the left corner of the end zone.

McPherson, who completed 14 of 21 passes for 131 yards, now has completed 259 of 500 passes at Syracuse, breaking the marks of 250 completions and 482 attempts, both set by Todd Norly from 1982 through 1985.

Holy Cross 34, Army 24--Tom Kelleher ran for three touchdowns, and Jeff Wiley completed 16 of 27 passes for 214 yards and 2 scores to lead Holy Cross at West Point, N.Y., in the season opener for both schools.

Holy Cross’ two-way player, Gordie Lockbaum, was used sparingly in the third and fourth quarters after the Crusaders took a 27-3 lead. He was involved in 107 plays, 56 on offense, 44 on defense and 7 on special teams. The senior was credited with 11 carries for 61 yards, 2 catches for 15 yards and 1 kickoff return for 23 yards. On defense, he had 7 solo tackles and 3 assists.

William & Mary 27, Navy 12--William & Mary scored the first time it got the ball on a 12-yard run by fullback Larry Black and spurted to a 27-0 lead in the second quarter on the way to a victory at Annapolis, Md.

The loss against the Division I-AA Indians (1-1) spoiled the debut of new Navy Coach Elliot Uzelac and the wishbone attack he installed last winter.

Colgate 31, Bucknell 28--Freshman Rory Crump kicked a 26-yard field goal with 1:27 to play at Hamilton, N.Y., to give Colgate a Colonial League victory.
