P. V. Estates : Jet Skiers Imperil Surfers
Hoping to avert collisions between surfers and jet skiers at Bluff Cove, the City Council directed City Manager Gordon Siebert to research ways to enforce a state law prohibiting motorized water vehicles from coming within 100 feet of swimmers.
“It’s a matter of time before there is a serious accident,” Pat Corwin, a Rancho Palos Verdes resident, told the council. Corwin, a surfer and the principal of Soleado Elementary School, said many youngsters who surf at Bluff Cove “don’t know the proper place to be when jet skiers are in the area.”
Resident David Constable, 73, who said he has surfed at Bluff Cove for 50 years, said the number of Jet Ski enthusiasts has increased this summer in the cove.
Constable, who asked the council to prohibit Jet Skis in the cove, said the cove has long been a popular surfing spot because of its gentle waves. Jet Skis, he said, “are like dirt bikes in the ocean. These things travel in speeds in excess of 30 m.p.h.”
The matter is scheduled again before the council on Oct. 13.
