Daniel Gwazda, 26, is in fair condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital and faces arrest on suspicion of burglary and a felony charge of injury to a police animal after he stabbed a police dog and himself during an attempted burglary Tuesday in the 6200 block of Danbury Way in Grantville, San Diego Police said Wednesday.

Police responded to the burglary call at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said the man had broken a window and entered the residence. Upon arrival, they saw the man standing in a front bedroom, said Sgt. Jim Gavin.

“They surrounded the house and made several attempts to call him out,” Gavin said. “When he refused, they sent the dog in. They heard the struggle, and the dog handler called the dog out. Then the officer went in and saw the suspect lying on the bed.”

Gavin said police then saw Gwazda stab himself in the abdomen. They also realized the dog had been stabbed, he said.
