National League Roundup : Pirates’ Dunne Returns to Torment Cardinals Again, 1-0

Mike Dunne, traded away by St. Louis in April, pitched three-hit ball for six innings to beat his former club for the second time this season as Pittsburgh downed the Cardinals, 1-0, Thursday night in a game delayed a total of 2 hours 39 minutes by rain at Pittsburgh.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals retained their 1 1/2-game lead in the National League East over second-place New York, which lost to Montreal, 4-1.

Bobby Bonilla drove in the only run with a first-inning double as Dunne (12-5) won for the ninth time in 10 decisions.

The game was delayed 28 minutes at the start, for 1 hour 24 minutes in the top of the sixth, 26 minutes in the bottom of the sixth and for 21 minutes in the eighth.

Pittsburgh scored in the first inning against Greg Mathews (10-10) when Jose Lind reached first on third baseman Terry Pendleton’s error and scored on Bonilla’s double to left.

Dunne turned back the biggest Cardinal threat when Ozzie Smith doubled with one out in the first and Tommy Herr walked before being forced at second on Willie McGee’s grounder. Terry Pendleton walked to load the bases, but Dunne got Mike Laga to fly out.

St. Louis, finishing a four-city trip with a 4-6 record, also couldn’t convert scoring opportunities in the third and sixth innings.

In 15 innings against St. Louis, Dunne has allowed only one earned run and six hits.

San Diego 7, Atlanta 1--Garry Templeton hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run to cap a five-run sixth inning and give the Padres a victory over the Braves at San Diego.

Eric Show (8-16) scattered eight hits, struck out five and walked three in his fifth complete game. He improved his record to 11-2 lifetime against Atlanta.

Zane Smith (15-9) worked six innings and was charged with all of the Padres runs, though only two were earned.

Benito Santiago of the Padres homered and doubled to extend his hitting streak to 21 games, the longest current streak in the majors and the longest in the National League this season.

San Francisco 4, Houston 0--After Rick Reuschel tossed a two-hitter to give the Giants their sixth straight victory, San Francisco Manager Roger Craig named the 38-year-old right-hander to start the first game of the National League playoffs on Oct. 6 if San Francisco wins the division.

Reuschel (13-7) is tied with Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers for the league lead in complete games (12) and leads in shutouts (4). He walked one and struck out five in San Francisco en route to his third straight complete game. Reuschel, 5-1 since joining the Giants on Aug. 21, lowered his earned-run average to 2.64, best in the big leagues.

Wildness plagued losing pitcher Danny Darwin (8-10) who gave up two hits but walked five and hit one in six innings. Darwin did strike out five, giving the 31-year-old right-hander a personal season high of 128.

No Astro reached second base, and only three Astros reached base at all.

Philadelphia 4, Chicago 3--Steve Jeltz doubled home two runs and scored another in a three-run second inning that gave the Phillies a win at Philadelphia.

The Phillies’ Don Carman (11-10) worked six innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out five. Steve Bedrosian entered the game with one out and one on in the eighth inning and finished for his major league-leading 38th save.

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first when Juan Samuel opened with a walk, took second on a wild pitch by Jamie Moyer (11-14) stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris James.

Philadelphia later knocked out Moyer and took a 4-0 lead in the second.

Chicago cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth when Wade Rowdon hit his first major league home run after a single by Brian Dayett.

Bob Dernier made it 4-3 in the fifth with his seventh home run of the season.

Montreal 4, New York 1--Hubie Brooks drove in three runs and Pascual Perez pitched a four-hitter for his fourth victory without a loss and the Expos knocked off the Mets at Montreal.

Perez struck out eight and walked one in his second complete game. The Expos have won all six of his starts since he was called up from Indianapolis of the Triple-A American Assn. on Aug. 19.

The Expos broke a 1-1 tie on a two-run homer by Hubie Brooks in the sixth against New York’s David Cone (5-4).
