A Northwest Airlines Boeing 727 en route to San Diego with 146 passengers returned to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Thursday after smoke was seen coming from the cockpit, an airline spokesman said.

Passengers from Flight 193 were transferred to another plane, which left Minneapolis about 10 a.m. PDT and landed safely in San Diego, said Northwest spokesman Robert Gibbons.

Gibbons said the smoke was caused by faulty electrical wiring leading to the plane’s radar unit. He said there was no fire.
