Developers and Santa Clarita Cityhood

I would like to correct some false impressions that were given in the article “Keys to the City” (Aug. 23) on the issue of cityhood in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The basis of the formation of the cityhood committee was “local control” not to stop growth but to control growth. Since the city of Santa Clarita was reduced from 95 square miles to 40 square miles and, in the process, set up an area in which virtually all the development has been approved, many of us wonder why the unseemly haste in putting cityhood on the ballot in November, and why the frantic scramble to put the argument for “yes” on the ballot.

The city as now proposed was not opposed by developers for the simple reason that they already have their building permits, etc., and any developer that did not want to be part of the city had only to say so and they were out, except for a couple of last-minute requests.

But anyone who thinks they will not oppose annexation has another think coming. With our supervisor depending on campaign contributions from large developers, you can be assured that he will give them any help that they need. The whole situation smells of backdoor politics.

The article would seem to give the idea that the issues are rather clear-cut. This is far from being so.
