Chinese Displaced by Fire to Get New Homes
Thousands of families left homeless by one of China’s worst forest fires will move into newly built homes before winter, the New China News Agency said Friday.
The report said 35,000 construction workers have been working 15 hours a day to build homes in the burned out areas of Heilongjiang province and Inner Mongolia in China’s northeast. The news agency said the new houses will be covered with fireproof materials and will provide housing for 8,000 families. Those still without homes will be put up by other families, the report said.
Forest fires that began May 6 and burned out of control for more than a month killed 193 people, injured 226 and left 50,000 homeless. About 3.2 million acres were charred. Officials blamed careless forestry workers for starting the blazes.
