A man returned to his car after stopping by a friend’s North Hollywood apartment for 15 minutes early Monday to find a newborn baby abandoned in the back seat, Los Angeles police said.

The child, identified in police records as Baby Boy Doe, was left about 1:30 a.m. in the unlocked car near the intersection of Weddington Street and Blakeslee Avenue, Detective Lou Berman said.

The infant was estimated to be only 1 to 2 hours old when he was found by Kirk Arrington, 23, Berman said.

The baby was taken to Childrens Hospital, where he was reported in good condition. He was placed in the custody of the Los Angeles County Department of Children’s Services while police searched the neighborhood where he was found.

Police were also checking hospitals for leads into the identities of his parents. Berman said the parents could face felony charges of endangerment and abandonment.

“It is an unusual case, but, fortunately, this boy is in good health,” Berman said. “It almost looks like the person who abandoned him was somewhat concerned. He was put in a place where he would be detected.”

Emery Bontrager, spokesman for the Department of Children’s Services, said the boy will be placed in a foster home after being released from the hospital.
