3 AIDS-Infected Boys at New School; Absenteeism Rises
Three AIDS-infected brothers, whose family was driven out of this town when someone torched their house, started classes today in a new school in the city of Sarasota and officials reported a rise in absenteeism.
School officials said 120 of the school’s 615 students stayed home--an absentee rate of about 20%, compared to 5% Tuesday. There were no protesters at the school.
The three hemophiliac brothers who were infected apparently through contaminated plasma-based medication--Richard, 10, Robert, 9, and Randy Ray, 8--enrolled at Gocio Elementary School in Sarasota at about 10:20 a.m. and were greeted by Acting Principal Lee Koose.
Other children attending the school already had arrived and were in their classrooms.
