If there was a running joke around the Marmonte League, it would go like this: I went to a (fill in a league school) football game the other night and a track meet broke out.

Defenses might not find it funny.

Three Marmonte running backs rushed for at least 170 yards each last weekend. Marc Monestime of Thousand Oaks and Tony Kerr of Simi Valley each gained 176 yards and Bill Bell of Camarillo ran for 170.

Bell is the league leader with 300 yards in two games, followed by Monestime (294) Kerr (264) and Royal’s Chad Sourbeer (203). Sourbeer gained 157 yards the first week of the season.

Rushing: The Marmonte League is not the only domain of the 100-yard ballcarrier. Other backs with 100 or more yards last week were Cliff Robinson of L. A. Baptist (289), Russell White of Crespi (218), Lamark Allen of Saugus (158), Phil Reynolds of Bell-Jeff (140), Joe Everett of Village Christian (137), Tim Lavin of Chaminade (123), Marty Holly of Harvard (118) and Tarin Cardenaz of Burbank (101).

Defense: In two games, Rio Mesa opponents have rushed for 584 yards. The Spartans have allowed three running backs to gain at least 170 yards each. Bell’s 170-yard game helped defeat Rio Mesa, 33-27. The previous week, E. J. Miller gained 172 yards and Reginald Williams had 178 yards in Channel Islands’ 17-14 win.

Five Notre Dame players have intercepted passes. Reggie Dominique, Ozzie Vallejo and Doug McGuff each have two, and Steve Hamilton and Matt McElreath each have one.

Passing: Rob O’Byrne of Crespi might be the quarterback on a run-oriented team, but he is ranked third among area passers with 326 yards. Darren Renfro of Hart has passed for 497 yards and Jeff Barrett of Burroughs has 344.
