Vladimir Horowitz was named “artist of the year” and his “Horowitz in Moscow” LP won record of the year in the Mumm Champagne Classical Music Awards, a show (set to be broadcast later this year on radio) devoted solely to classical music. Classical musicians have “always been getting the crumbs from the Grammy Awards,” said Bernard Gurtman, executive co-producer of the show. Other winners: Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and pianist Murray Perahia. A Classical Hall of Fame was also established, with the first inductees being Horowitz, Leonard Bernstein, pianist Rudolf Serkin, conductor Sir Georg Solti and violinist Isaac Stern.
