Walnut : No-Smoking Areas Studied
The Planning Commission will consider an ordinance requiring Walnut’s 14 restaurants to set aside no-smoking sections. The action was requested by Los Angeles County, which recently required no-smoking sections in restaurants in unincorporated areas.
The City Council voted 3 to 2 for the commission study. Councilmen Drexel Smith and Bert Ashley objected, saying the ordinance would hamper the city’s efforts to attract more restaurants.
Walnut is seeking new businesses to make up for lower income from developer fees when the city reaches its population limit of 30,000. The city has 23,750 residents, 13.4% more than in 1986, making it the second-fastest growing city in the county.
