Three firefighters were injured and a square block of business buildings was temporarily evacuated when fire broke out at a gun shop and shooting range in Maywood. Los Angeles County fire Battalion Chief John Janzen said the vicinity of the Tri-City Gun Shop and Shooting range, in the 4400 block of East Slauson Avenue, was evacuated because firefighters feared the flames might detonate small-arms ammunition stored on the premises. The fire was finally extinguished after 90 minutes, but not before one firefighter suffered a broken leg when he fell through a floor and two others required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation. Janzen said it was believed that the fire began in the basement, but the cause of the blaze was still under investigation. Damage to the building and its contents was estimated at $240,000.
