Camarillo Fails in Attempt to Switch Leagues

A decision by the Southern Section’s governing body to move Santa Ynez High to the Frontier League will keep Camarillo in the Marmonte League through the 1989-90 school year.

Marmonte and Camarillo officials had supported a recommendation that called for Camarillo to move to the Frontier and Santa Ynez to move from the Tri-Valley to the Los Padres, changing four odd-number team leagues into six-team leagues. But that recommendation was voted down Thursday, 5-3. The alternative recommendation moving Santa Ynez to the Frontier was approved by a 7-to-1 vote.

Santa Ynez’s move will make the Tri-Valley and Frontier six-team leagues. The Marmonte remains a seven-team league, protracting scheduling problems during the football season.

“We especially have trouble the last five games of the season,” Camarillo Principal Donald Bathgate said. “The goal is still to get the Marmonte into an even-number league.”

The realigned Frontier League will consist of Agoura, Calabasas, Nordhoff, Santa Clara, Santa Paula and Santa Ynez for the 1988-89 school year.

The Southern Section Council also ratified a recommendation to move Notre Dame from the Del Rey League into the newly formed San Fernando Valley League for the 1988-89 school year. The league will comprise Bell-Jeff, Chaminade, Harvard, Notre Dame, St. Genevieve and La Salle (except for football). The girls teams at Alemany and Louisville will be league members.

The recommendation removes Bell-Jeff, Chaminade, Harvard and St. Genevieve from the Santa Fe League, which will consist of Cantwell, Cathedral, El Segundo (football only), Mary Star of the Sea (boys only), Daniel Murphy, Pater Noster, St. Monica (football only) and Salesian.
