ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Carter and Edison Meet Servite Tonight

Edison High School running back Kaleaph Carter needs to gain 99 yards against Servite to establish himself as the Chargers’ career rushing leader when they meet the host Friars at 7:30 tonight in Anaheim’s Glover Stadium.

Kerwin Bell, The Times’ Back of the Year in 1979, rushed for 2,226 yards and 26 touchdowns in 14 games to lead Edison to the Big Five Conference title in 1979 after he transferred from St. Francis.

Carter, a three-year starter, has rushed for 2,128 yards and 23 touchdowns in 26 games. Carter enjoyed the best game of his career last week, gaining 177 yards in a 29-27 loss to Capistrano Valley.

Edison (0-2) has never lost three consecutive games in a season since the school opened in 1969, but the Chargers could have trouble moving the ball against the Friar defense, which is led by linebacker Mike Petko.

Servite (1-0-1) has experienced problems offensively despite the presence of quarterback Jason Frank and running backs Derek Brown and Craig Barkley. The Friars resorted to a full-house backfield last week in a 6-0 victory over Marina, using Frank as a blocker.

Pat Blottiaux kicked field goals of 55 and 56 yards, and become the first player in state prep history to kick two field goals of 55 or more yards in one game.

In other games tonight, undefeated Newport Harbor and Huntington Beach play on Sheue Field; Sonora, looking for its first victory, plays host to Don Lugo; host Bolsa Grande goes for its third consecutive victory against Savanna, and high-scoring Dominguez meets Saddleback in Santa Ana Stadium. All games begin at 7:30.
