The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is getting permanent lights. Installation of a four-mile string of 1,700 fluorescent lights was authorized by the California Transportation Commission. About half of the money to pay for the $860,000 project was donated by more than 40,000 bridge users after temporary lighting was installed for the bridge’s 50th anniversary. The trans-bay bridge was opened in 1936. The Golden Gate Bridge was opened in 1937.
