A $5-million plant built to filter industrial solvents and dissolve heavy metals from water taken from the Stringfellow Acid Pits in Riverside and pumped through Orange County’s sewer system and into the ocean off Huntington Beach is exceeding performance requirements, according to an independent audit. P. Ravishanker, project manager for the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority, reported that the 18-month audit, conducted by K.S. Dunbar & Associates, a Rancho Murietta-based engineering firm, had concluded that the treatment plant was “performing excellently.” The plant, run by the federal Environmental Protection Agency, began operation in 1985 after health officials concluded that the contaminated water from the dormant toxic dump was threatening safe ground water supplies in the area.
