Architects to Participate in Westwood Symposium

A panel of architects working in the United States will participate in a symposium dealing with “Architecture, Democracy and Politics” on Oct. 11 at the Wadsworth Theatre at the Veterans Administration Hospital, 19020 Wilshire Boulevard, Westwood, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event, co-sponsored by UCLA Extension and the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning, will feature illustrated lectures by architects Arata Isozaki, Michael Graves, Robert A. M. Stern and Barton Myers. A panel discussion on design competitions will be led by architect Charles Jencks and a wrap-up discussion will be moderated by Richard S. Weinstein, dean of the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Isozaki is a Tokyo-based architect whose first major American commission is the new Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Myers of Barton Myers Associates, Los Angeles, did a major housing project for the northwest campus at UCLA and serves there as a professor of graduate studies in urban design.

Graves is the Schirmer Professor of Architecture at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1962, and Stern of Robert A. M. Stern, New York, is a professor at Columbia University, host of a PBS series on “Pride of Place: Building the American Dream” and winner of national honor awards of the American Institute of Architects in 1980 and 1986.

Entries to the Phoenix Municipal Government Center design competition will be presented as part of the one-day symposium. This event will be co-sponsored by the Extension’s interior and environmental design program and UCLA’s Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning.
