Local News in Brief : Peach Fruit Flies Found

Share

The discovery of three peach fruit flies near Los Angeles International Airport has prompted county agriculture officials to set up traps to kill the male flies.

Although the peach fruit fly has the potential of doing harm to some types of local crops, it does not pose the same danger as the durable Mediterranean fruit fly, County Agricultural Commissioner Paul Engler said Monday.

The flies were caught in county-monitored traps in a lemon tree in Westchester on Sept. 22, a peach tree in Lennox on Sept. 24 and a nectarine tree in Westchester on Sept. 25.

Bait stations containing sex lures are being hung on utility polls, trees and fence posts in nine-square-mile areas around each property, officials said.
