Late Move Gives Williams State Middleweight Title

It would be reasonable to think that a manager who had just seen his fighter win the state middleweight title would be quite happy.

Not Max Gutierrez.

Gutierrez was complaining about Tim Williams after the San Diego fighter had stopped Alex Ramos of Bell in the eighth round of their scheduled 12-round bout, the main event at The Country Club in Reseda on Tuesday night.

“He has the power but he waits and waits for the right moment,” said Gutierrez, William’s manager. “I want him to be more aggressive.”

He was more than aggressive enough for Ramos (27-7-2, 18 knockouts), who went down twice from solid rights in the seventh round.

Then in the eighth, Ramos, 160, took another powerful right, staggered, turned his back on Williams, 160, and stretched out over the ropes.

He’d had enough.

Referee Pat Russell signaled the fight over at the 1:47 mark of the round and Williams (13-3-1) had his 11th knockout and the state title.

That title had belonged to Michael Nunn, but the North Hollywood fighter has relinquished it in the hope of winning the North American Boxing Federation middleweight title in his Oct. 29 championship fight against Darnell Knox in Las Vegas.

It was Ramos’ second unsuccessful bid to gain the state title. He lost a unanimous decision to Nunn last November.

In other bouts:

Light-heavyweight Milford Kemp (10-3-3, 3 knockouts) of Venice won a six-round split decision over Nate Hauser (3-1) of Long Beach.
