Santiago Runs His Hitting Streak to 32 as Reds Hand Padres 7th Loss in Row
Benito Santiago keeps hitting, and the Padres keep losing.
Santiago, the outstanding rookie catcher, doubled in the fourth inning at San Diego Wednesday night to extend his hitting streak to 32 games, but the Padres lost their seventh in a row, 3-1, to the Cincinnati Reds.
Santiago’s streak, longest in the National League this season, has been topped in the majors only by the 39-game streak of Milwaukee’s Paul Molitor earlier in the season.
Santiago is the 17th player in major league history to hit safely in at least 32 straight games. He will have four more chances to extend the streak this season.
The Padres, who briefly climbed out of the cellar in the West earlier in September, clinched last place with the defeat.
Red starter Tom Browning (8-14) needed help in the ninth after Carmelo Martinez hit a home run. John Franco got save No. 31 as the Reds won their fourth in a row.
