Local News in Brief : Slide Settlement OKd

Share

County supervisors have agreed to settle a suit brought by 47 Rancho Palos Verdes property owners against the county and other agencies for damage resulting from landslides. Under the terms, which must be approved by a Superior Court judge, the landowners would receive $3.6 million over three years and $3 million in low-interest loans to repair damage.

The residents of the Portuguese Bend and Abalone Cove areas on the south shore of the Palos Verdes peninsula sued several county agencies in 1979, blaming road work done more than two decades ago, misplaced drainage systems, neglect and a broken sewage pipe for slides that destroyed two homes and damaged others.

In a unique arrangement, the settlement also calls for the sale of bonds to provide up to $15 million in construction and land improvements to prevent future landslides in the area.
