Local News in Brief : AIDS Low in Drug Users
Two recently completed surveys show that AIDS virus infection rate among intravenous drug users in Southern California remains much lower than in many other cities.
One, a survey of 171 heroin addicts at clinics run by Dr. Forest Tennant of Community Health Projects Inc., found that two out of 171 drug users tested positive. The second, a survey of 293 intravenous drug users who were admitted to residential drug treatment centers in Los Angeles County in July showed that 14, or 4.8%, were infected with the AIDS virus.
The second survey also showed that many of the drug users, while not infected with the AIDS virus, put themselves at risk by sharing needles and not using condoms. It was prepared for the county Department of Health Services by Douglas Anglin, a UCLA researcher.
