SLIGHT OVERKILL

When we saw that Touchstone was touting “Stakeout” as “BREAKING RECORDS EVERYWHERE!,” you know we had to find out about all those records. Turns out the cop drama with Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez isn’t quite breaking ‘em everywhere. In fact, it’s barely breaking ‘em anywhere.

The sleeper hit is doing very nicely--grossing over $54 million in eight weeks, with “at least $10 million more” anticipated, according to a studio rep. But he could provide only two milestones: The pic is one of two this year to top box-office contenders five weekends in a row, along with “The Secret of My Success.” And--is this really a record ? -- “Stakeout” is the fourth highest grosser in the company’s (short) history (“Ruthless People,” “Splash” and “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” leading, in that order).

“Not that many records were actually broken by the film,” admitted the rep. “Nothing to stop the presses over.”
