Aloha Tournament Moves to Orlando From Honolulu
The Aloha tournament, a post-season college all-star event sanctioned by the National Basketball Association, is moving to Florida after nearly two decades of play in Honolulu, Hawaii.
NBA officials announced Thursday sponsorship of the tournament has been awarded to the Orlando Magic, scheduled to begin play in 1989 as one of four new NBA franchises.
The tournament will be played April 14-16 at the Civic Center in Lakeland, about midway between Tampa and Orlando, and in the downtown Orlando arena now under construction in the years following.
“This tournament will provide all NBA teams the chance to see the top college seniors,” said Rod Thorn, NBA vice president of operations who governs the Aloha tournament. “It will be advantageous for both the teams and the players, and we are pleased that the Magic has undertaken this project.”
The tournament features 32 of the nation’s best college players divided into four teams, each coached by a different college coach. Officials said the tournament probably will be renamed.
