Local News in Brief : Campus Waste Collection
Three college campuses will become collection points for hazardous chemicals during a statewide campaign to eliminate dangerous materials from science classrooms.
Professional toxic-waste handlers will operate from Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Harbor College in Wilmington and Rio Hondo College in Whittier for up to five days in November or December as they retrieve chemicals from public and private schools and junior colleges in Los Angeles County.
Under the “chemical sweep,” as state school administrators are calling it, radioactive wastes eventually will be shipped to Washington state or Nevada, while toxics that can be burned will wind up in incinerators in Arkansas or Texas. Less harmful chemicals will be sent to a private dump in Santa Barbara County.
Local schools and school districts will pay for the removal.
