Against Giants, 49ers Come Up With Wishbone and 41-21 Win Before 16,471
The San Francisco 49ers had a more experienced non-union roster on paper than the New York Giants, and they proved it on the field Monday night.
Del Rodgers ran two yards for a touchdown and Mike Wells returned a blocked punt one yard for another score as the 49ers’ replacements scored twice in a 28-second span just before halftime and went on to rout the Giants, 41-21, before 16,471, a record low for the Giants at 76,000-seat Giants Stadium.
“They made a game of it while they could physically,” 49er Coach Bill Walsh said of the Giants. “But I think we were better than them, and we wore them out.”
The 49ers came into the game with 17 players who had some National Football League experience to only 4 for the Giants, who turned the ball over four times and were never in the game after collapsing just before halftime.
“I don’t have any control over the situation, including the procurement of players.” Giant Coach Bill Parcells said. “I am just playing with the cards I was dealt.”
Some 40,000 tickets were returned by fans, making it the first non-sellout in 87 games at Giants Stadium.
