A car chase involving a San Diego police officer ended in a four-car crash and minor injuries to three people Tuesday night near Balboa Park, police said.

The chase began about 6:30 p.m. when a police officer attempted to make contact with two men in a car that was doubled-parked in Logan Heights. When the driver pulled away and ran a stop sign, the officer began pursuit, and parts of the ensuing chase were at high speeds, police said.

When the two cars approached Balboa Park, the suspect sideswiped one car while attempting to pass traffic stopped for a red light at Park Boulevard and Presidents Way. The car that was sideswiped was then struck by another auto, which in turn was hit by the police car.

The suspects continued for a short distance on Park Boulevard before stopping and being taken into custody.

Three people in the two civilian cars involved in the accident were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor neck, back and chest pains, police said.

The suspects, whose names had not been released as of late Tuesday night, were booked into County Jail downtown on suspicion of auto theft, reckless driving, hit-and-run driving and evading arrest.
