Some teammates have privately criticized Cincinnati Reds outfielder Eric Davis as a player who babies himself and doesn’t return to play quickly enough from injuries. Davis said, though, that his vigorous style of play is bound to keep him out occasionally with injuries.

“People are going to look at my season and say, ‘If he had not gotten hurt, what could he have done?’ ” said Davis, 25. “But I can’t worry about what people say. I just have to go out and do what I can do.

“I wasn’t tired in the second half, I was more worn down. People have to understand, I am never going to play 162 games in my career because of the way I play. I’m going to play 135 or 140. To play 162, I would have to alter my style, and I am not going to do that because I wouldn’t be the player that I am.”
