Local News in Brief : Airline Injunction Stands
The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to overturn a temporary injunction issued by a U.S. District Court judge that allows 26 commercial airline flights a day at Long Beach Airport, eight more than the city permits under its noise abatement regulations.
The court turned aside without comment Monday an appeal by the city to review the injunction issued earlier this year by Judge Laughlin Water, who allowed the increased number of flights pending the outcome of a trail on a lawsuit brought by several major airlines in 1983. The trial is now set for March 8.
Long Beach Mayor Ernie Kell said the decision was not surprising in view of the court’s heavy calendar. But, he added, “It will adverse affect us noise-wise.”
