If you have $10,000, you will soon be able to own 12 volumes’ worth of manuscripts by Leonardo Da Vinci--in facsimile form, that is. The manuscripts, which have been locked in the vaults of the Bank of France for more than a century, include pocket notebooks, drawings and “mirror script” (Leonardo’s backward handwriting) on flying machines, anatomy, recipes, the planets, the human eye, military engineering and other matters. A spokesman for the Italian publishers, Giunti Editore, said each manuscript was taken under armed guard to a photographic studio in Paris to be photographed. Each of the 12 volumes is to be released individually, with the last one due out in 1989.
