THE SCHEDULING ALTERNATIVES

Share

The Los Angeles Unified School District is considering three options to put additional schools on year-round schedules. The accompanying calendar shows how the “multi-track” calendar would work--in which three-quarters of students in a single school would be present at a given time, with some common time off. The “single track” schedule would follow the calendar labeled “B” in the chart. The three plans:

OPTION ONE

The Plan: All traditional-calendar elementary schools would convert to a single track (Track B), year-round calendar July 5.

The Schools: Thirty-two schools would adopt multi-track calendars--Fries, Gulf, Taper, Nevin, 92nd Street, Russell, South Gate New Elementary No. 2, Bell New Elementary No. 1, Hyde Park, Miller, Western, West Vernon, Alta Loma, Hillcrest, Los Angeles New Elementary No. 1, 6th Avenue, Warner, Westwood, Arminta, Hazeltine, Valerio, Broadous, Dyer, Castlebay Lane, Germain, Gridley, Langdon, Noble, Plummer, Sharp, 4th Street, Sierra Park.

Additional seats: 5,000.

Advantage: Officials say converting all other elementary schools to the single track calendar would encourage child-care, recreation and other community service agencies to offer their services year-round.

OPTION TWO

The Plan: Schools feeding four junior high school complexes would convert to year-round.

The Schools: 1. Drew Junior High and McKinley, 93rd, 96th, 99th, Parmelee and South Park elementary schools would be on the single track calendar; 92nd and Russell elementary schools would be on multi-track. 2. Carver Junior High and Holmes, 9th Street and Vernon City elementary schools would be single track schools; Nevin and West Vernon would be multi-track. 3. Nobel Junior High and Beckford, Calahan, Darby, Superior and Topeka elementary schools would be single track; Castlebay Lane and Germain would be multi-track. 4. Dana Junior High and Bandini, Barton Hill, Cabrillo, Crestwood, 15th Street, Park Western, Point Fermin, South Shores and White Point elementary schools would be single track; Leland, 7th Street and Taper would be multi-track.

Additional Seats: 2,200.

Advantage: Allows families with children in elementary school and junior high to be on the same school calendar.

OPTION THREE

The Plan: Four magnet schools would convert to the multi-track, year-round calendar.

The Schools: Brentwood Science, Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies, 32nd Street/USC Performing and Visual Arts Center.

Additional Seats: 1,300.

Advantage: Enables more students to attend these schools, which have long waiting lists.
