Pitcher Floyd Youmans of the Montreal Expos has been ordered to get into a drug rehabilitation program or face a one-year suspension, a newspaper reported.

According to Le Journal de Montreal, the ultimatum came from the office of Commissioner Peter Ueberroth.

Reached in West Palm Beach, Fla., Expos’ President Claude Brochu declined to comment, Le Journal said. “You are well informed, but you’ll understand that we can’t comment on the matter,” Brochu said. “We’ve agreed with Youmans and his agent to act with the greatest of discretion.”

In August, Youmans denied published allegations that he used cocaine extensively on several occasions in the last two baseball seasons. He refused to take a drug test suggested by the Expos but did submit to psychological tests.

After three days of observations, two psychologists concluded that Youmans had not been using cocaine when he was placed on a 15-day disabled list in June, adding that his alleged heavy use of the drug would have left him unable to function.
