Local News in Brief : Quake Victims Get Help
Reacting to housing problems of victims of the recent earthquake, the Legal Aid Society of Los Angeles has opened telephone message lines to give taped advice to renters who fear that they might be displaced from their apartments.
The messages, recorded in English and Spanish, will give information on locations of Red Cross shelters and federal disaster assistance, said Barbara Blanco, phone line coordinator. The messages, which also explain how disaster aid can affect immigration status, will be updated periodically.
Renters also will be to told how to get their buildings inspected, what to do if a building appears to be unsafe and how to proceed if landlords deny them access to their apartments.
The English-language line, at (213) 252-3900, began service on Tuesday. The Spanish-language line, at (213) 252-3901, begins service at 4 p.m. today.
