Long Beach : Optional Plans for Coast Club
A San Francisco architect hired by Long Beach preservationist groups said he has drawn four designs to try to save the historic Pacific Coast Club, but has yet to finish the economic studies to see if the building could be a financial success.
Leon Sugarman said he envisions the 61-year-old institution on Ocean Boulevard as a hotel, condominium or combination of both. Options include saving all or part of the structure. He said he presented his plans last week to Long Beach attorney Douglas W. Otto, who is heading the drive to preserve the building.
After the City Council rejected the owner’s plans to incorporate part of the old building into a new development, the city Planning Commission approved an alternate plan that calls for demolition of the landmark club to make way for a new high-rise condominium. Owner Robert R. Bellevue of Burlingame said, however, that he will seriously consider any workable plan presented by preservationists before proceeding with the building’s demolition.
