A Pacoima man died Wednesday after he was shot outside his home by an uncle who was arrested after attempting to run over police with his car, Los Angeles police said.

Carl Steward, 27, died at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills about 12 hours after being shot in the upper body at 9 p.m. on Tuesday in the 11900 block of Herrick Avenue, Lt. Bernard D. Conine said.

Conine said the victim was shot during a dispute with his uncle, Ronald Lewis, 37, a resident of the same block. Detectives had not determined the nature of the argument, Conine said.

Patrol officers arrived after receiving reports of gunfire, and witnesses pointed out Lewis, who was driving away, Conine said. Lewis swerved his car toward the officers, and one of them fired at Lewis and missed, Conine said.

After a short chase, Lewis’ car collided with another vehicle, Conine said. No one was injured.

Lewis was being held at the Foothill Division Jail on suspicion of murder, Conine said.
