Local News in Brief : Oxnard High Schools Due Enrollment Boom
Enrollment in Oxnard high schools will double in the next 20 years, and five high schools must be built within a decade to accommodate the boom, a projection shows.
A consultant for School Planning Services of Laguna Hills told the Oxnard Union High School District board of trustees last week that the number of students would rise from 10,773 to 22,939 in 20 years.
District officials said they hope to begin construction on the first new high school by 1991 and will present a list of 12 possible sites to Oxnard planning authorities on Dec. 6.
The report did not address suggestions that another site be found for aging Oxnard High School, which could experience more noise and safety problems if nearby Oxnard Airport is expanded.
The Oxnard High School District consists of five schools and one alternative high school. The district serves a large area, including Port Hueneme, Point Mugu, Camarillo, Oxnard, El Rio, Somis and the Santa Rosa Valley.
