San Diego Roundup : Vintage Cars Race at Del Mar : This Weekend’s Exhibitions Divided Into 7 Classes

Vintage car exhibition races, which are part of the Camel Grand Prix of Southern California two-weekend program, will be held today through Sunday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Next weekend, the IMSA GT Sports Car Championship will be held at Del Mar.

The races this weekend will feature cars that used to race but are not competitive anymore. Cars range from pre-World War II race cars to old Austin Healys to a 1973 Formula One Shadow. Because of the diversity, the cars are grouped into seven classes, depending on their power potential.

As of late Thursday, 160 cars had entered, but more were expected.

The drivers will practice from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Saturday, and races will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday. Admission is free today, $5 on Saturday and $10 on Sunday.

Juli Veee and Branko Segota of the Sockers will appear at the San Diego Hall of Champions from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The players will give a demonstration and a clinic. The Hall of Champions is located in Balboa Park.

Laurette Maritz of United States International University has been named the women’s collegiate player of the year by the Women’s College Golf Coaches Assn. Maritz, who plays on the Ladies Professional Golfers Assn. mini-tour, was the first four-time first-team All-American in the history of women’s collegiate golf. She won nine tournaments in four years at USIU.

Fred Miller, San Diego State athletic director, will speak at the “Spirit of the Barrio” luncheon at 11:30 a.m. today in the Logan Heights Family Center at 1809 National Ave. For more information, call 234-8171.

The $10,000 I Dig Sportswear six-man beach volleyball world championships will be held Sunday. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. at Bonita Cove near the Mission Beach roller-coaster. Beach volleyball stars such as Sinjin Smith, Mike Dodd, Randy Stoklos and Steve Salmons are expected to play. For more information, call 287-5078.
