A police officer suspended for allegedly possessing cocaine has resigned from the San Diego Police Department, Cmdr. Keith Enerson said Friday.

Officer Charles E. Lewis, 33, a six-year veteran, cited personal reasons for his resignation Wednesday, Enerson said, adding that the department did not seek Lewis’ termination.

The narcotics investigation began two months ago, when Lewis was spotted with a woman targeted in a separate drug probe, Enerson said.

Denise Clark, 30, of National City, was arrested Oct. 8 on suspicion of three counts each of possession of cocaine for sale and the sale of cocaine. That same day, Lewis was placed on suspension.

Enerson said police discussed the case with the district attorney’s office, and that “we agreed we wouldn’t introduce evidence into the court to use for prosecution” against Lewis.

Steve Casey, a spokesman in the district’s attorney’s office, said Friday that his office would not prosecute Lewis, regardless of “whether he resigned or not.”

“It’s not prosecutable,” Casey said.

However, it was unclear why charges were being pursued against Clark, but not Lewis.

Lewis was a San Diego patrol officer in the Southeastern Division and had been a member of the department’s WE CAN (Walking Enforcement Campaign Against Narcotics) unit.
