GROSS OUT

Never one to use less than superlatives, Cineplex Odeon chairman Garth Drabinsky told Outtakes that the 3-month-old, 18-screen, 6,000-seat Universal City multiplex is “the highest-grossing theater in the world.”

We did some quick arithmetic using Variety’s weekly accountings and figured that the complex had done $2.9 million during that period, or an average of 23% capacity weekly (based on an average $5 price).

Drabinsky said the theater consistently brought in a weekly box-office of $250,000 during the summer, but expected that figure to drop off between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. The cinemas, says Variety, did $400,000 on opening weekend, then began dipping. The complex did $136,300 last week, down from $148,000 a week earlier.
